Enrolling at SO De Piloot
Welcome to our school! We’d be happy to tell you about our school and how you can enroll your child with us. We offer specialized support to our students. Please read this information carefully so you can determine whether our school would be a good fit for your child.
Steps for Enrollment
Getting to Know Us First
Of course, you’ll want to get a feel for our school first. In this video, we’ll show you around our school and explain how we work. It’s also possible to take a tour of our school. We believe it’s important to maintain a peaceful atmosphere at our school. For this reason, a maximum of two people per child may participate in the tour. You can request a tour by contacting Bureau Instroom at 010 – 420 53 14.
Which school offers the right support for my child?
Our school provides special education cluster 4 (hereinafter: SO 4) to students ages 4 through 12. Within our organization (the BOOR Foundation), we have several schools that focus specifically on a particular learning environment within SO 4. Each school therefore has its own approach, enabling us to provide the right support to our students.
Therefore, when registering your child, please pay close attention to which school you are enrolling them in. Would you like to know more about this, or are you unsure about which school is right for your child? Please feel free to contact Bureau Instroom.
Enrollment
If you choose to enroll your child at our school, you will go through our enrollment process. During enrollment, you will answer questions about your child—such as your child’s birthday, where your child lives, and whether your child needs any special support. We refer to this as the parents’ duty to provide information.
When enrolling at our school, there are two possible scenarios:
1. Through the PPO Central Enrollment Process
Your child attends school in Rotterdam and lives in Rotterdam. This means your child falls under the PPO Rotterdam partnership. All enrollments for these children are processed through the Central Enrollment Process (CAR). The school liaison or guidance counselor at your child’s current school will handle the enrollment through the CAR, in consultation with you. Please contact your child’s current school. You can also send an email to centraleaanmelding@pporotterdam.nl.
In this video, PPO Rotterdam explains how to enroll in elementary schools in Rotterdam.
2. Directly through our Admissions Office
Does your child not attend school in Rotterdam, or does your child live outside Rotterdam? If so, your child falls under the school district for that region. In that case, the registration process is handled through our Admissions Office.
To do so, please contact the Admissions Office. The Admissions Office will provide information about our school and the enrollment process. When a spot becomes available, you will receive an email from the Admissions Office. This email will explain which documents are needed to complete your application as thoroughly as possible. For children who have not yet attended school, the Admissions Office will handle the application for the Certificate of Eligibility (TLV).
What happens after enrollment?
Once we have received your written enrollment application—either directly from you or through the CAR—we will begin processing it. As a school, we take six weeks to decide whether we can meet your child’s educational needs and whether to enroll your child. We use this time to determine whether our school is the right fit for your child. You can read about the support we can offer your child in our school guide. The school guide and department guides for our various locations can be found here.
Sometimes, six weeks may not be long enough to make a decision. In that case, we’ll take up to four additional weeks. If we decide to use this extra time, we’ll notify you in writing.
Duty of Care
From the moment you register your child in writing at our school—and provided we are your first choice—we have a duty of care. This means that we must find a suitable spot for your child at our school or at another school. Sometimes, the school consortium also helps us with this.
We do not have a duty of care:
To properly assess whether our school is the right fit for your child, you, as parents, have a duty to provide information. This means you must inform us if your child needs additional support. If you do not wish to share this information with us, we may choose not to process your application.
Waiting List
Have you registered your child for a class that is currently full? In that case, you can have your child placed on the waiting list. To do so, please contact the Enrollment Office. When a spot becomes available, we will contact you. We do this in the order in which names were added to the waiting list. We do, however, take the priority rules into account.
Please note: Your child cannot be placed on the waiting list if they will not be able to attend school within the next three months. Placing your child on the waiting list only makes sense if it is absolutely clear that they would benefit most from attending an SO-4 school.
Priority Policy
If there are more applications than available spots, we will allocate the spots while also taking the priority policy into account. We apply the legal criteria to these applications, and if there are more applications than spots, we will fill the remaining spots using the following priority rule:
Eligibility Statement
Children attending special education schools need an eligibility statement (TLV). This is an official statement required for students who need special education. This statement is requested from and issued by the cooperative association.
It is important that, at the time of registration, a Declaration of Eligibility is either available or has been requested from the cooperative association to which the student belongs. Without a TLV, the child cannot be enrolled—and therefore cannot start—at our school.
Other Important Information Regarding Enrollment
Parental Authority
It is important to note that when new students are enrolled, their legal status regarding parental authority is verified. If a parent indicates that they have sole parental authority over their child, Bureau Instroom will verify whether this legal status is correct. We do this by requesting an extract from the Public Parental Authority Register at the court.
Age
The minimum age for enrollment is 3 years and 9 months.
Potty Training
Every child who enrolls must be fully potty trained.
